TIP: While many blogs are used as a personal journal, a new use has immerged, professional or authority sites use this web journal to further communicate there knowledge of a subject, including products or current events. Blogs are now used for market research and search engines just eat them up. So if you are designing a site and want to further your cause of becoming an authority on the subject, this is a great tool for you.
Click-through – is the process of clicking through a online advertisement to website
Click-through rate – is the percentage of visitors who take a desired action.
Conversion rate – how often visitors buy or register
Cost-per-action [CPA] – is a type of online advertising where payment is based on actions such as sales or registrations.

CPC] – is the cost of a click-through of an online advertisement
Cost-per-thousand [CPM] – is cost per thousand impressions.

Keyword – a word used in performing a web search.
Keyword density – is the keywords as a percentage of indexable text words.
TIP: Keyword density norms vary from search engine to search engine. Some search engines use body text, meta tags, ALT tags, link text, comment tags and a many more. For example if a keyword is used 3 times in a page with 100 indexable words the keyword density is 3%. I recommend staying between 3 – 7% so it is recognized as important topic, but you will not be penalized for keyword stuffing.
Keyword research – is the research for keywords related to your website.
TIP: Keyword research is made easy by listing keyword and keyword phrases [1-4 words] specific for your site. Add them to one of the many online keyword suggestion tools, and choose the specific keywords you wish to target. Specific keywords and phrases will give you higher conversion rates and yield the highest ROI [Return On Investment] Next perform a competitive analysis, analyzing the strength of competitors for potential keywords.
Link Checkers – are tools used to check for broken hyperlinks.
TIP: Include a 404 File Not Found file so you do not loose visitors because of slow-loading pages or broken links.
Linking Deep – is linking to a web page other that a site’s home page.
TIP: Linking deep allows you to link to the appropriate page for the web search request.
Link coming inbound - is a link from a site outside of yours.
TIP: A link coming inbound is a good thing and the more the better I say, it’s free advertising.
Link going outbound - is a link to a site outside of yours.
TIP: Link going outbound are valuable if it is providing high quality reference.
Link Popularity – is a measure of the quantity and quality of sites that link to your site.
Tips: Research quality sites that can link to your site, a major directory carry more weight than an inbound link from content-poor site. Link Popularity is an example of search engines to use something besides text indexing to determine quality of content.
Link Text – is the text contained in and near a hyperlink.
TIP: Link text as your hyperlinks to other pages is an important SEO method. Having targeted keywords or phrases as the text and linking it to another page increases link popularity and possible page rank.
Log File – is a file that records activity on your web host server.
TIP: Log files yield information about which and when files were requested along with who and where they are from. This is valuable in formation and with a number of software product that are out today you can analysis the data for more effective SEM.
Meta Tags – are tags used to describe aspects about a webpage.
TIP: Some search engines use the description and keyword tags in there search engine listing, so make sure these two meta tags are included on each pages code.
Title tags – are tags used to define the text in the top line of the web browser, many search engines use it in the title of their search listing.
TIP: Title tags are important part of SEO, use target keywords or phrase with a 50 character limit.
Pay-Per-Click [PPC] – is a type of online advertising where you bid on placement of your ad and it is shown when your target keyword or keyword phrases are in a web search. You are then charged when qualifying click-throughs are made.
TIP: You can’t be successful without doing some form of this. [Examples: Google’s Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing’s Sponsor Search]
Pay-Per-Lead [PPL] – is online advertising where payment is based on qualifying leads.
Pay-Per-Sale [PPS] – is online advertising where payment is based on qualifying sales.
Reciprocal Links – are links between two sites, often based on an agreement by the site owners to exchange links.
TIP: Reciprocal Links are an inexpensive way to increase website traffic and link popularity.
Search Engine Optimization [SEO] – is the process of choosing keywords or keyword phrases related to a site, including them on the website pages in text and code to ensure the site places well in a web search.
TIP: SEO starts with the design of the site, keyword and competitive analysis research should be complete before the initial design is worked on, then targeted keywords and phrases should be included in page titles, meta tags, heading tags, and in visible and non-visible text.
Search Engine Marketing [SEM] – is a phrase that encompasses any act that promotes, increases traffic or ranking of a website, and works in conjunction with SEO. Examples of SEM are developing doorway domains or pages, Pay Per Click, Pay Per Lead, Pay Per View, Banner Advertising and Link Building Programs.
Signature File [.sig] – is a short block of text at the end of a email, identifying the sender and providing whatever information about the site or product deemed necessary.
Site Stickiness – is how long visitors use the site over a period of time.
Viral Marketing – is when you encourage people to pass along a marketing message.
Website traffic – is the amount of visitors that visit a website.
